Thank you for the time you spend training. I'm sure it is for your safety and the community's good.

Training for a job that gets done the other way There's a training model in this business that looks responsible and costs a fortune, and it's built on a lie: that if you document the class, the crew is covered. It isn't. Training someone to do a thing a different way than it will actually be done is not training. It's theater with a certificate attached. You can put a crew through a class on a staffing model the department can't staff, on a tactic that gets overridden on the scene, on an apparatus response that gets browned out, on an inspection cycle that gets deferred. Everyone shows up, everyone signs in, and the evaluations get filed. Then the bell rings and the work happens the way the department actually runs — short-staffed, improvised, and one person doing what used to be three people's jobs. The certificate says they were trained. The conditions say the training was fiction. The gap between those two is where people get hurt, and it's the gap the record won't show. It's also the most expensive thing we do. Overtime, backfill, closed stations, instructors, materials, the hours pulled off the floor — all of it spent teaching a competency nobody will be permitted to practice. Resources that were supposed to buy capability buy paperwork instead, and the paperwork then functions as proof that we knew and did nothing. What the Paper Tigers are actually after Here's the part that's harder to say out loud: Paper Tigers love training. They are the loudest supporters of it in the room, and they don't much care whether it's good, bad or useless. All three serve the same purpose. Good training — they attend, they take a photo, they claim the outcome. Nothing about the conditions changes. Bad training — it's still a line item, still a certificate, still a shield. Nobody asks what it was for. Useless training — the favorite. It's cheap, it's fast, it fills the log, and it never once challenges how the department actually operates. Training is the cheapest way to look like you're fixing something. It photographs well, it's defensible in a hearing, and it leaves the staffing model — the actual cause — exactly where it was. A Paper Tiger will fund a class before he'll fill a seat on a truck, because the class is a receipt and the seat is a commitment. Meanwhile the crew keeps running the work the other way, and the gap widens. The tell Ask one question of any training program: will the crew be allowed to do it this way on the next alarm? If yes — that's training worth the money, and it should be measured against how the department actually runs. If no, it's a receipt. And a receipt that documents a known gap, sent to a crew you sent out anyway, is evidence. Put the concern in writing. Every time. Cc yourself. #PaperTiger #Training #Firehouse
